If fiscal year 2024 is showing us anything, it’s that lotteries across the US are in good standing.
Whether it be states with online lotteries or those that are retail only, sales totals are pushing toward all-time records in most cases.
Take the Louisiana Lottery, for instance. While FY24 wasn’t a record-setting campaign, the state still put up the second-highest sales total in its history.
The $640 million in lottery purchases is just a 2% drop from the $653 million record that was set in FY23.
Total lottery sales surpass $600 million once again in Louisiana
The $640 million in lottery sales marks just the third time that Louisiana has exceeded $600 million in its yearly history.
Though the overall sales were down year over year, trends show that Louisiana is still on an uphill climb:
- FY17: $455 million
- FY18: $491 million
- FY19: $524 million
- FY20: $509 million
- FY21: $625 million
- FY22: $583 million
- FY23: $653 million
- FY24: $640 million
Scratch tickets were the top seller for Louisiana once again, tallying $311.7 million. That accounted for 48.7% of the state’s total sales. Compared to FY23, scratch numbers were down 2.4%.
This year, the Louisiana Lottery struck a new deal with Scientific Games to remain the state’s primary scratch game provider.
Draw and Fast Play games made up the rest of the sales, equating to the remaining 51.3%. That totaled $328.3 million. In FY23, that figure was $333.7 million, which means sales dipped 1.6%.
$205 million generated for Louisiana education
Like the sales, the transfer back to the state of Louisiana was one of the largest in the lottery’s history.
A total of $204.8 million was sent to the Minimum Foundation Program, which funds K-12 education in the state.
That contribution was the third-most the Louisiana Lottery has been able to generate. It was also $13.4 million over what the state budgeted for the year.
FY23 set the record with a $212 million contribution. FY21 saw the state produce a $207 million transfer.
Since the Louisiana Lottery began in 1991, it has sent nearly $4.8 billion back to state-funded programs.
