Here’s our experience playing the Illinois Lottery online

We thoroughly tested the Illinois Lottery online experience via the mobile app and desktop website. In this section, we’ll run through some of the key factors we look for to measure online lottery quality.

Overall ease of use and navigation

Let’s start out with the general feedback, which is overwhelmingly positive. The Illinois Lottery user experience is extremely polished. We expect this, considering the state was the first to offer online purchases back in 2012. That’s a long time to refine a product.

Put it this way: The mobile website looks and feels more like a humming app than many (if not all) of the other online lotteries in the US. Some, like Georgia, offer a website that is functional, yes, but still feels a bit clunky.

In Illinois, games are easy to find via the home page or main menu (accessed at the top left of the screen), and they load quickly. You can scan retail tickets (via the app) to see if you have a winner. A dedicated results page for all draw games is readily accessible from the main menu. This overall ease also extends to payments and withdrawals, which we’ll cover in more detail below.

The only minor complaint we have in this section is some wonky design choices. For example, the “Promotions” section is within the “My Account” page instead of the main menu. However, these issues are few and far between, and they don’t take away from the overall amazing online experience offered by the Illinois Lottery.

App vs. browser site

The Illinois Lottery offers online purchases via desktop website or mobile app. After testing each platform, we didn’t find much difference between them. Both allow you to purchase tickets and play games.

However, the big advantage of the mobile app is the ticket scanner. If you purchase and play a scratch-off from a retail location, you can scan the barcode from your phone’s camera to confirm whether it’s a winner. The desktop site doesn’t have this option. The mobile app also allows for deposits using Apple Pay, which isn’t available on desktop.

Truthfully, you can’t go wrong with either option, but we prefer the mobile app for its ease of use and extra features.

Payments and withdrawals

The Illinois Lottery takes a “less is more” approach to online payment methods. The following options are available:

  • Credit/debit card (VISA, Mastercard, Discover)
  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay

While it’d be nice to see other methods such as PayPal or ACH included, the options that are available are fairly universal. We’ll cover payments in more detail below, but for now, suffice it to say the options are easy and simple.

One noteworthy quirk is that Apple Pay is only available in the mobile app. You can’t use it on a desktop. Google Pay and credit/debit are available across all platforms.

Game variety

We give high marks to the Illinois Lottery in this category. You can play multi-state draw games such as Powerball or Mega Millions, plus Lotto, Lucky Day Lotto, Pick 3, and Pick 4.

Additionally, the IL Lottery has 27 Fast Play games, which are essentially instant online tickets. These are a big draw for the site because they’re quick, flashy, and easy to play. Imagine playing a scratch-off from your phone without the need to rummage through your junk drawer for a stray quarter. That’s what Fast Play offers.

The one downside of playing the Illinois Lottery online is that you can’t play in second-chance drawings. Those are reserved for retail players only.

Promotions

You might wonder whether there are Illinois lottery promo code offers. The answer is “sometimes.”

Lottery promo codes are few and far between in Illinois, but they do pop up on occasion. The Illinois online lottery has a dedicated promotions page accessible from your account on the app or desktop site. (Don’t look for a “Promotions” page — the info is contained in your “My Account” page.)

During our time testing the platform, no promotions were offered. That doesn’t mean you should give up hope. Check back on your account page for offers, as they may become available in the future.

Second-chance drawings could be viewed as a type of promo, but these are only offered at retail locations in Illinois.

Pros and cons of the IL online lottery

  • Amazing mobile app and desktop site
  • Check scratch-off wins via mobile app
  • Collect winnings online

Cons

  • No second-chance drawings available online
  • Limited payment methods (no PayPal, ACH, or Venmo)
  • Promotions are rare

What Illinois Lottery games can you play online?

Here’s a quick look at the main game categories available for online play in Illinois.

Fast Play

Fast Play games are Illinois’ take on instant win games. Once you purchase a fast play game, you can play it right away and see whether you’ve won. There are 27 Fast Play games available online, and they range from $1 to $20. Some offer progressive jackpots with prizes that climb until somebody wins.

  • Best instant win game: Big Number Knockout is a $5 game with a progressive jackpot and a unique gameplay loop; you want numbers that don’t appear on the wheel.

Powerball, Mega Millions

Powerball and Mega Millions are two of the most well-known lottery draw games. They are offered across numerous states, including Illinois. You can play both games online in the Prairie State.

Other draw games

Illinois has a few other lottery draw games: Lotto, Lucky Day Lotto, Pick 3, and Pick 4. The prizes are much smaller in these games than in major draw games like Powerball and Mega Millions.

  • Best draw game: Lucky Day Lotto is our top game because it has a smaller field of numbers than other games but still offers big prizes.

Games not available online in Illinois

A few games remain available in Illinois retail locations only.

Fast Cash

Fast cash lottery games are only available in retail locations. They don’t require you to wait for a drawing because they function similarly to Fast Play titles.

Second-chance drawings

Second-chance drawings are not offered online in Illinois. They are only available at retail locations.

Instant tickets

Scratch-offs can only be purchased from an Illinois lottery vending machine or at a participating retailer. The physical nature of the gameplay (i.e. scratching the ticket itself) makes them impossible to play online.

Keno

In Illinois, the lottery doesn’t have online keno or retail keno. However, certain organizations allowed to conduct charitable gaming are allowed to offer keno. Residents can also play keno slots games at any of the casinos in Illinois.

For online keno games, players can find some options at legal social online casinos, such as Paintball Keno at Funzpoints and Book of Keno and Bubbles Keno Slot at Pulsz. Social casinos have players use fake digital currency that can then be redeemed for real cash prizes.
