Light & Wonder, Oregon Lottery Finalize Expansion For Over 1,200 New VLTs

A recent deal between Light & Wonder and the Oregon Lottery will bring more than 1,200 new Kascada Dual-Screen video lottery terminals (VLTs) to the Beaver State.

The deal is the second in less than a year. L&W installed 1,175 machines statewide after a September 2023 agreement between the two parties.

VLTs have been legal in Oregon since 1992 and account for over 70% of the state’s lottery sales. Scratch tickets, Keno, and lottery draw games like Powerball and Mega Millions make up most of the rest.

The Oregon Lottery has operated since 1985. It has awarded over $40 billion in prizes and generated more than $15 billion for state programs supporting public schools, job creation, state parks, and natural resources.

Light & Wonder VLT agreement builds on successful 2023 deal

Light & Wonder has an established relationship with the Oregon Lottery, which caused the two to enter a trial agreement in January 2023. L&W chose the Oregon market to test its new Kascada machines and installed 100 of them in the Salem area.

The machines’ successful test phase led to a September 2023 deal in which the Oregon Lottery purchased another 1,000 units.

Less than a year later, the Oregon Lottery has secured enough machines to double its current total. Niaz Nejad, Managing Director of the Americas, Gaming at Light & Wonder, said in a press release:

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Oregon Lottery and to provide their players with our state-of-the-art Kascada Dual Screen Multi-Games.

“The additional placement of over 1,200 VLTs is a testament to the success and popularity of our games in the region. We are committed to delivering innovative and engaging gaming experiences that enhance player enjoyment and drive growth for our customers.”

L&W also introduced its Kascada machines internationally last year at several Macau resorts. The company first announced the technology in October 2020.

New Oregon VLTs include wide range of hit games

With the new agreement, L&W will install more than 1,200 new Kascada machines in addition to the 1,175 already operating throughout the state.

The VLTs offer advanced, dual-screen technology with a full lineup of games, headlined by:

  • American Original and American Original Stars & Bars
  • Bier Haus
  • Blazing Hot Celebrations
  • Flush Frenzy Poker
  • Lightning Tusks
  • Quick Hit Money Wheel
  • Treasure Fruits

Sar Richards, Manager of Video Gaming Products at the Oregon Lottery, added:

“We’re excited to continue our partnership in bringing Light & Wonder’s popular games and product expertise to our Video Lottery players. They consistently use our feedback to deliver quality products that benefit our team and customers.”

Oregon Lottery sales grow in FY 2024

A report from the state lottery commission at the end of April announced Oregon had $1.365 billion in sales through the first 43 weeks of fiscal year 2024. The total represented 1.2% growth from the same timeframe in FY23 ($1.349 billion).

Oregon Lottery sales are up despite a 12-day ice storm that cost the state an estimated $23 million in lottery sales during that period. Three popular games also have year-over-year declines: video lottery (-0.3%), Keno (-3.5%), and Mega Millions (-4.1%).

However, Powerball made up for the hardships elsewhere. Sales totaled $89.4 million, up 34.7% from $66.3 million through the first 10 months of the year.

And the April 7 drawing awarded an Oregon Powerball player a $1.33 billion jackpot. The ticket was sold at a North Portland convenience store.

FY24 ended on June 30, and PlayiLottery will provide an updated report on the Oregon Lottery’s yearly sales as soon as the commission releases them.
