Rhode Island Online Lottery Overview

The Rhode Island Lottery (often called the RILOT) offers limited online play options. On this page, we’ll walk you through the need-to-know details, including which games are available and how you can play them. Read on for our comprehensive overview of Rhode Island’s iLottery options.

Can you play the RI Lottery online?

Yes, you can play the Rhode Island Lottery online. However, there are a few hoops to jump through, and the game options are relatively limited compared to those of the 11 other state-run online lotteries, as well as the platform in Washington DC (not including markets that only have lottery couriers).

There’s a Rhode Island Lottery app and website offering keno and e-Instants for online players. We’ll explain all the details on this page so that you can start playing online in Rhode Island right away.

Want to play the RI Lottery online? Here’s our experience

We spent some time with the Rhode Island online lottery to give you a full overview of our experience. Here are the key things we noticed.

How to sign up

Getting started with the Rhode Island Lottery is fairly simple. If you’re on the site, tap the icon with the padlock in the upper right and then select “REGISTER” in the pop-up window. If you’re on the app, tap “Login/Register” in the green banner at the top of the screen to begin.

From there, follow these steps:

Provide your email address and type it a second time in the provided field to confirm it.

Create a password, then type it again to confirm.

Enter your first and last name, date of birth, gender, address, and phone number in the provided fields.

Choose a security question and provide an answer.

Add more security questions if you’d like.

Check the box to opt in for notifications if desired.

Check the box to agree to the RILOT terms and conditions.

Optional: Create a VIP+ Purchase Power account

That’s the core process. However, to get access to online lottery games in Rhode Island, you will need to create a VIP+ Purchase Power account. To sign up, check the box at the bottom of the sign-up page indicating you wish to have a VIP+ Purchase Power account, and then provide the last four digits of your SSN.

VIP Club: What it is and what it gets you

The VIP Club is the Rhode Island Lottery’s name for its online platform. When you create an account, you will become a “VIP.” There are two VIP account types, and there are a few major differences, the biggest being that you must have a VIP+ Purchase Power account to play games online via app or desktop.

Here’s a quick comparison:

Can you do this online?VIP+ Purchase PowerVIP Standard
Check winning numbersYesYes
Access promotionsYesYes
Play kenoYesNo
Play e-InstantsYesNo
Second chance drawingsYesYes

Neither account has any cost attached. When you sign up as a VIP+ Purchase Power member, you will connect a bank account to make ACH eCheck deposits and withdrawals.

Games offered: Keno and e-Instants

As we mentioned in the early sections of this page, Rhode Island’s online lottery options are limited. However, with a VIP+ Purchase Power account, you can access online keno and e-Instants.

The selection of e-Instants is solid. More than 60 are available at various price points and with interesting themes.

It’s also super easy to access all the games. In the app, they’re all presented to you directly on the home screen, and you can simply sift through the options at your leisure. It’s the same with the mobile browser version, although you’ll have to scroll down more to see all game varieties.

You can also access information on retail scratch-off games from the app home screen—a unique feature. With other online lotteries, you usually need to dig through the main menu to access that information.

However, it’s disappointing that draw games aren’t part of the RILOT app or website. It would be nice to buy Powerball, Mega Millions, or Lucky For Life tickets on the go.

Online ticket-checker for draw games and scratchers

While you can’t play draw games or scratch-offs online, the Rhode Island Lottery mobile app allows you to check tickets online. Tap the “Check My Ticket” option in the lower left-hand corner of the homepage and allow the app to access your camera. Scan the barcode on your draw game or scratch card to scan it and see if you’ve won.

In the absence of actual online play for draw games, the ability to check tickets via the app is a nice consolation prize.

App and desktop available

The Rhode Island online lottery is playable via the mobile app and browsers. As long as you have a VIP+ Purchase Power account, you can play e-Instants or keno online but no draw games, which makes it one of the more limited online lottery sites in the US.

A normal VIP account will give you access to the app and site but will not allow you to play games online. That’s the only difference to note.

The RILOT app is available for iOS devices in the App Store or for Android devices via Google Play.

In our experience, both platforms work very well with streamlined user interfaces. We prefer the app just for the sake of convenience. As we said earlier, we had quick access to all the game information we needed from the home screen (we didn’t even need to scroll down at all). The main menu within the app is super helpful, too, with links leading to info on winning numbers, how to claim prizes, second chance drawings, and responsible gaming.

Looking for online lottery bonuses? Rhode Island has you covered.

The RILOT site offers a welcome bonus worth up to $50. When you join and make your first deposit, the Rhode Island online lottery will match 50% of your funds up to a maximum of $50. Thus, a $100 deposit would get you the full bonus.

Other promos rotate in and out at the Rhode Island Lottery. When a new game launches, the site sometimes offers a chance to win extra prizes for players who try it.

If you sign up for a VIP Club account (it’s free), you also get access to exclusive promotions and second-chance drawings. If you’ve signed up for a VIP+ Purchase Power account, you already have these benefits.

The RILOT site promotes its new player offer on the home screen, so you can’t miss it. Then, you can access other promo information by opening the main menu, tapping “Player Zone,” and selecting “All Promotions” in the next menu. If you’re using the app, open the main menu and select “Second Chance.” This button will direct you to the site’s second chance drawings page. On that page, tap “SEE ALL PROMOTIONS.”

Create your account.

Instructions are further up on this page. Be sure to sign up for a VIP+ Purchase Power account; you must have one to play online.

Fund your account.

Make your initial deposit into your account (and don’t forget about the deposit match bonus).

If you’re on the app, you can access all the available games from the home screen. You can also do this on the site, but it may be easier to access the main menu. Tap “Games” and then pick from your options on the next screen.

On both the site and app, tapping on the image for the game you want brings you to a page with tabs for information on how to play and odds and prizes. (We love this.) You can try a demo of the game. Tap “PLAY” on the site or “PLAY NOW” on the app to start playing with real money.

How to play Powerball in RI

Powerball tickets are not available to purchase online in Rhode Island. As such, the process to buy them looks like this:

  1. Head to a participating retailer.
  2. Ask for a play slip or grab one from the stack near a lottery vending machine.
  3. Fill out your play slip with your numbers (or use quick pick) and choose whether to add Power Play to your entries.
  4. Bring the play slip to the cashier or scan it in the vending machine.
  5. You will receive a ticket with your numbers and a barcode on it. Keep it in a safe place.
  6. After the drawing, either check your winning numbers or scan the ticket in the RILOT app to see whether you got a prize.

How to play Mega Millions in RI

Draw games aren’t offered online in Rhode Island, but you can still use the RILOT app to make the Mega Millions process smoother.

  1. Visit a partnered lottery retailer.
  2. Snag a play slip for Mega Millions.
  3. Fill it out by selecting your numbers, Megaplier (if desired), and the number of drawings you wish to enter.
  4. Scan your ticket at the vending machine or give it to a cashier. You will receive your tickets in return with your chosen numbers.
  5. Once the drawing occurs, scan your ticket using the RILOT app or check the numbers online to see if you’re a winner.

Which RILOT games are available online?

There are two main game categories available for online play from the Rhode Island Lottery.

The Rhode Island Lottery offers more than 60 e-Instant games for online play. These instant win games live up to their name by settling right away. Most e-Instants take just a few seconds to complete. The prices and prizes vary widely; some let you win up to $250,000, and several feature every-growing progressive jackpots.

  • Best instant win game: Little Green Men Warp Reactor is our favorite RILOT e-Instant because of its fun sci-fi theme and colorful gameplay. We’ve included a screen recording of us trying out the demo on the app.

Online keno is the second option for Rhode Island iLottery players. Drawings occur every four minutes, so there’s always time to get in on the action. You can pick your numbers manually or choose a quick pick. You can also use recent picks or save numbers to your favorites for future draws.

Online lottery games not available in Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Lottery hosts a plethora of games that are playable only at retail locations.

Powerball, Mega Millions

These multi-state draw games often come with massive jackpot prizes. They’re available only via retail locations in Rhode Island, but you can still scan your tickets using the RILOT mobile app.

Wild Money

The Wild Money draw game features five white ball numbers and one extra ball number. The minimum per play is $1, and it’s available at Rhode Island Lottery retail vendors.

The Numbers

What a refreshingly simple name for a lottery draw game. The Numbers features two daily drawings: one at 1:30 p.m. and one at 7:29 p.m. Match two, three, or four of “The Numbers” to win a prize.

Lucky For Life

The grand prize in Lucky For Life is $1,000 daily for life. The draw game has five regular numbers and one lucky ball. Drawings take place at 10:30 p.m. each night, and you can purchase tickets up until 9:30 p.m. for each evening’s drawing.

The Rhode Island Lottery’s Bingo game is offered at retail locations only. Plays start at $1, and new draws are held every eight minutes. If you want to try bingo online, there are a few social casinos in Rhode Island that offer it, such as Pulsz and Chumba.

Rhode Island has pull-tab games available for purchase at retail lottery locations.

Instant tickets

Instant tickets or scratch-offs are available at participating lottery vendors across Rhode Island. While you can’t play these online, you can scan the barcode on your game to see if it’s a winner.

Will Rhode Island offer online lottery draw games in the future?

This question is hard to answer because there’s no concrete evidence that Rhode Island will expand its iLottery offering to include draw games any time soon. However, many states—including a few of Rhode Island’s neighbors—allow draw game purchases online.

In short, there’s no legislation in the works to make such a change, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

The other possible outcome is the advent of courier services in Rhode Island. Companies such as Jackpocket are known for offering online purchases and sending a courier to buy the physical ticket on behalf of the player. Jackpocket and similar services have been popping up in various markets, and Rhode Island could be next.

One factor that could stop Rhode Island from offering online purchases for draw games is the state’s size. It takes less than an hour to drive across the state, which means a lottery retailer is never far away. Rhode Island could avoid legalizing online purchases to funnel more business to its retail partners.
